Metabolic Rate is simply the SPEED of your body's metabolism. If you compared this to an automobile, it would be the measurement of how fast the engine was running. In many ways your body is similar to a car engine in that it burns fuel and air to generate energy. Your "Base" Rate or Basal Metabolism describes the speed when your body is "At Rest" and could be compared to the "Idle Speed" of a car smoothly idling but still in park. When you increase body activity by walking the dog, playing tennis or having sex, your rate of metabolism increases - It's like stepping on the gas pedal of your car and revving up the engine!
